Know Before You Hire

Is Your Architect Actually an Architect?

Most people offering "architectural services" near you aren't legally allowed to call themselves architects. Here's why it matters and how to check.

The Problem

Anyone can draw plans.
Not everyone is an architect.

The word "architect" is protected by law in the UK. Only someone registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) can use it. It's the same as calling yourself a doctor or solicitor - you need the qualifications and registration to back it up.

But here's the thing: anyone can offer architectural services. Draughtsmen, technicians, designers - they can all draw your extension plans. They just can't call themselves architects.

So what's the difference? A minimum of 7 years' of training, professional exams, a code of conduct, insurance requirements and ongoing accountability.

What It Means for You

Why hiring a registered architect protects your project

01

Proper Training

A registered architect has completed at least 7 years of university education and professional practice. They understand structure, building regulations, planning law and design - not just how to draw lines on a page.

02

They're Insured

ARB registered architects must carry professional indemnity insurance. If something goes wrong with the design, you're covered. With an unregistered designer, you might have no comeback at all.

03

Code of Conduct

Registered architects follow a strict professional code. They have to act in your best interest, be transparent about fees and maintain professional standards. It's not optional - it's a legal requirement.

04

Better Design

Architects are trained to think about how you live - light, space, flow, proportion. A good architect doesn't just make your extension bigger. They make your whole home work better.

05

Planning Success

Architects understand how planning officers think. They know what gets approved and what gets rejected. That experience means fewer delays, fewer surprises and a smoother process.

06

Adds Real Value

Research consistently shows that architect-designed homes and extensions achieve higher sale prices. Good design isn't a cost - it's an investment that pays for itself.

ARB is the baseline.
RIBA Chartered is the gold standard.

ARB registration means someone is legally allowed to call themselves an architect. RIBA Chartered means they've gone further - meeting the highest standards of professionalism, competence and integrity in the industry.
